Our History

Emami Paper Mills Limited, a part of the Emami Group of Industries, operates state-of-the-art paper manufacturing facilities in Balasore, Odisha, and is recognised as one of the most environmentally conscious paper mills in Eastern India.

The Company is the largest manufacturer of newsprint in India, with an installed capacity of 1,50,000 tonnes per annum, producing premium-quality newsprint comparable to imported standards.

In addition, Emami Paper Mills has a strong presence in the consumer packaging board segment, with a combined capacity of 2,00,000 tonnes per annum, covering both recycled-grade and virgin-grade boards, catering to diverse packaging requirements.

The Company’s strategic diversification into the paperboard segment has emerged as one of the most talked-about success stories in the paper industry, driven by the outstanding performance of its board machine and strong market acceptance of its products.

Emami Paper’s paperboard has also built a solid reputation in international markets, with nearly 10%–15% of its recycled-grade paperboard exported overseas, reflecting consistent quality and global competitiveness.

With the revival of the global paper industry in the current year, the Company is well-positioned to capitalise on strong growth opportunities and sustained value creation in the years ahead.

Mr. R. S. Agarwal Founder & Joint Chairman

R. S. Agarwal, a present-day Management Guru and administrator par excellence is known for his great consumer insight and far sight. He, along with Co-Founder, R. S. Goenka are considered as unparalleled achievers of the modern business. From a very humble beginning and with very limited resources, Agarwal has driven the Organisation with exceptional and extra-ordinary skills to make Emami reach its present stage. His forte lies in identifying and capitalising on opportunities with speed and precision.R. S. Agarwal along with his childhood friend cum business partner R. S. Goenka, have over the years successfully transformed a humble entrepreneurial initiative into a home-grown business conglomerate – Emami Group with leadership presence in diverse industries viz. edible oil, paper & packaging board, writing instruments, real estate, retail, contemporary art and sports.

A Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary, LLB and a Master’s Degree holder in Commerce, R. S. Agarwal’s academic brilliance is an asset during times of major implementations. After steering Emami Ltd as its Executive Chairman, R. S. Agarwal has currently taken up a greater role of a ‘mentor’ as Chairman Emeritus and Non- Executive Chairman of the Company.

A passionate advocate of art, R. S. Agarwal is associated with many Welfare Societies, Charitable Trusts and Philanthropic organisations. Among innumerable awards and recognitions for his outstanding contribution to the industry and society as a whole, Mr Agarwal is the proud recipient of the Global Xaverian Award in 2014. He has also been conferred Degree of D.Litt. (Honoris Causa) by KIIT University of Bhubaneswar in 2017 and Doctorate of Philosophy (D.Phil.) Honoris Causa degree by Amity University, Kolkata in 2021. Mr. Agarwal has also been felicitated with the Most Respected Entrepreneur Award for the year 2023 by Hurun India, a leading research organisation on entrepreneurship.

Mr. R. S. Goenka Co-Founder & Joint Chairman

A great creator of shift of mindset, R. S. Goenka is always open to new ways of doing things to build new capabilities. He recognises the need to go into details and gives significant premium on loyalty and commitment.

As an M.Com and LLB, R.S. Goenka is an expert in taxation and known for his expertise in strategic planning, corporate affairs and finance. He, along with Co-Founder, R.S. Agarwal are considered as unparalleled achievers of the modern business. From a very humble beginning and with very limited resources, Goenka together with his childhood friend cum business partner R.S. Agarwal, played a key role in building Emami Group into a home-grown business conglomerate which enjoys leadership presence in diverse industries viz. edible oil, paper & packaging board, writing instruments, real estate, retail, contemporary art and sports.

After leading Emami Ltd to many milestones of success as a Whole-Time Director, R.S. Goenka has currently taken up a mentoring role as Non-Executive Chairman of the Company.

He has also served as the Honorary Consul of Republic of Poland in Kolkata and was the 5th Indian to have been awarded the Cavalier Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland in 2007. He is associated with many Welfare Societies, Charitable Trusts and Philanthropic organisations. He is a Director-Member of the Managing Committee of Merchant Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI).

Among innumerable awards and recognitions for his outstanding contribution to the industry and society as a whole, KIIT University of Bhubaneswar and Amity University, Kolkata have conferred Mr. Goenka along with Mr. Agarwal with Degree of D.Litt. (Honoris Causa) in 2017 and Doctorate of Philosophy (D.Phil.) Honoris Causa degree in 2021 respectively. In 2022, the State Government of West Bengal conferred Mr. Goenka with the title of Banga Bibhushan, the highest civilian award of the State. Mr Goenka also received the Most Respected Entrepreneur Award for the year 2023 from Hurun India, a leading research organisation on entrepreneurship.
